How to survive Madrid summer heat
Madrid in July and August is hot and dry, often above 35 C in the afternoon. With a little planning you can enjoy the city without melting, and without spending much.
Plan around the afternoon
The hardest hours are roughly 2 pm to 6 pm. Do your sightseeing in the morning and evening, and spend the peak in the shade or in air conditioning. Locals do the same.
Stay hydrated for free
Tap water in Madrid is safe and good. Carry a bottle and refill it at public fountains across the city.
Know your cool escapes
Libraries, malls and museums are free or cheap, and cold. They are the easiest way to reset during the worst hours.
